Board of Governors Regatta Report

The Board of Governors Regatta was held on August 23rd and 24th at the Quassapaug Sailing Center in Middlebury, Connecticut. Twenty-four teams participated in the regatta. The visiting teams were treated to ideal late summer weather and many took full advantage of the beautiful lakeside venue by camping on the lawn.

On Saturday morning, the sailors awoke to a brisk northeast wind rustling their tents. By the starting time, the wind moderated to a pleasant 5 to 10 knots. Substantial wind shifts kept the sailors and Race Committee on their toes throughout the day. The wind velocity held into the early evening, allowing the Race Committee to comfortably run two races and break for a relaxing on-shore lunch, which was followed by two more races in the late afternoon.

After a great day on the water, the Quassy volunteers prepared an awesome steak and lobster dinner that was enjoyed by all. The DJ got the party started after dinner and revelers young, and not so young, danced the night away.

Sunday was nearly a carbon copy of Saturday. The wind swung to the north and strengthened a bit with gusts topping 12 knots. With this wind direction, starts and leeward mark rounding were in front of the Sailing Center providing great spectating for the lawn and porch contingent. Two more races were easily held before the deadline, permitting the Race Committee to call one of Quassy’s patented “trading places races.”

The eventual winner of the regatta was never really in doubt. Cameron Fraser and Alejandra Higgins started fast with one second followed by three bullets, building a comfortable lead after the first day. Cameron and Alejandra finished strong on day two with a fourth and a second. The tally was an impressive 7 points, excluding one drop race. With the first place all but locked up early in the regatta, the rest of the fleet battled for the other top spots. Ben and Steve Braverman won the “trading places race.”

The consensus of the participants? Spending a beautiful weekend racing on Lake Quassapaug was a great way to cap off the summer.
