2014 SCIRA USA 78th Jr. National Championship

Okoboji Yacht Club, Iowa

July 26-27, 2014

Raul Rios and Henry Dumke win, Christian Cyrul and John Coolidge take top honors in the Special Jr. Fleet

The two day event, hosted by the Iowa Nebraska Snipe Fleet at the Okoboji Yacht Club, was plagued with fickle conditions. Local PRO Phil Petersen battled light breeze on Saturday, sneaking in just one race during what was deemed the “puff of the day” and holding two very early races Sunday before the breeze exceeded class limits.

Five time Junior National Champion, Raul Rios easily won the three races showing his skill in a variety of conditions, this was hist fourth consecutive win. Andre Guaragna sailing with local pick up crew Will de Rubertis placed second, winning the tie breaker over Harry Waskow who was also sailing with a pick up local crew Emily Myhre. Guy and Sarah Thomas took fourth in the junior fleet and joined Harry in qualifying for a berth to the 2015 Jr. Snipe Worlds in Talamone Italy next September.

In the Special Junior fleet Opti hotshot Christian Cyrul sailing with John Coolidge beat out the three other teams to win the Old Man Trophy. Christian and John both hail from the Privateer Snipe Fleet in Tennessee. Defending champion Maxwell Hetherington-Young sailing with his father Kevin took second and the other father and son duo of Tyler and Eliot Payson placed third.

The juniors are headed off to play miniature golf across the lake and the SCIRA USA National Championship for the Commodore Heinzerling Trophy starts tomorrow morning with a competitors meeting at 0830.
