Rodriguez & Stout Capture 2007 Frigid Digit Title

October 01
12:57 2007

Ernesto Rodriguez and Lorie Stout showed that versatility proved to be the key to success at the 2007 Frigid Digit, as wind ranged between slightly less than 5 up to about 15 knots during the five race regatta. Twenty-five boats turned out for the annual event hosted by Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, MD on September 29-30, traveling from as far as Gull Lake, Miami, Beverly, Cleveland, & St. Louis.

Heavy air and Olympic courses greeted the fleet on Saturday as the RC managed to send the fleet off on four races that eventually subsided to light/moderate air. Ernesto and Lorie took an early and formidable lead in the regatta with four straight bullets. Taking second for the weekend was Augie Diaz with crew Kathleen Tocke who won the first and only race held on Sunday. The fifth race in light air allowed for a drop, but the dying breeze meant that the fleet would pack-up early.

The rest of the top five pack was extremely competitive with only 1 ½ points separating third thru fifth and each nailing a second place finish in at least one race. Lee Griffith and Andrea Nilsen took third with Hal Gilreath and Clayton Dixon close behind in fourth. Perhaps one of the most memorable stories of the weekend was Bryan Stout with crew & dad Alex taking fifth after missing the first race on Saturday to assist a capsized boat and waiting with them until help arrived. The Stout team was appropriately granted redress and further backed it with consistent finishes in the balance of the regatta.

The event had several other notable firsts. Juniors Sam Williams and crew Patrick Mignon, who have been invited from the 420 class to compete in the US Championship of Champions in San Diego next month, made the Frigid Digit their first Snipe regatta. New Snipe sailors Aaron Serinis (Annapolis) and Sean Fidler (Gull Lake) made top twelve in their first season racing Snipes.

Many thanks go out to the Annapolis fleet for making this a great event including Greg Fisher & Brian Bissell of North Sails with the organization of Jon Anthony who held a successful boat speed clinic on Friday before the regatta.
