2003 District 6 Championships

May 31, June 1, 2003

The District 6 Championships were hosted by San Diego Yacht Club under mostly overcast skies and light winds. PRO Mike Foster and crew provided for great races under challenging conditions.

After a long tow to the race course off of Coronado, races got underway with only five knots of breeze and two-to-three foot swells. Adam Roberts and Nick Martin took the 1st race after a close downwind match with Jim Grubbs and Ruth Pauling of ABYC. The next race had a little more wind but found Adam/Nick with boat problems. Jim and Ruth were able to hold onto the lead after a short windward/leeward race. The sun finally came out for the third and final race for Saturday and the wind was closer to ten knots. With shifts up to 20 degrees, the fleet was spread-out over the course looking for shifts on both corners. Zach Brown/Danielle Richards pulled ahead with George Walker/Carol Merriman and Jerome Fournier/Julie Calvet right behind. By the day’s end, George and Carol were leading the regatta with Zach/Danielle in second.

Jim Elms was kind enough to volunteer his house for the evening’s party. After showers and a couple of beers, we all rolled up the hill and made good use the Jim’s bar-b-que and the keg provided by District 6. It was also great to see the Jackman family show up even though Bob didn’t make the races, he did provide help on R/C the following day.

The tow to the course was at an early 10:15 Sunday morning and most everyone made it. Only a couple of boats had to catch a tow from Jorge and Shelly Suarez who popped into town to drive a “rescue” boat for the regatta. With even less wind than the previous day, the races on Sunday were equally challenging. The breeze was blowing from nearly due South and shifted right early in the day.

The first race started with a puff and shift blowing in from the right and a little more kelp in the water to frustrate teams. Again it was Adam/Nick and Jim/Ruth battling at the front and finished 1 -2. The runs saw some big sifts and differences in pressure that allowed some big changes in positions. Race two only saw a small increase in breezes more boats heading for the right side. While some puffs did blow in from the left, Adam/Nick and George/Carol still saw gains on the right to lead the race with a 1 – 2 at the finish. The next race had our first general recall as the R/C setup the line to be more port-end favored to spread-out the fleet. The I Flag kept boats back behind the line for a clean start. For this race we saw Rick Arneson and Gus Wirth take an early lead and hold off Adam/Nick to the finish. The overcast skies had kept the thermal breeze from increasing above 7-8 knots. The the final race of the day, we saw our only upwind finish. The fleet split after the start, with those on the left betting on fading winds shifting left and those of the right hoping for a little more thermal effect to clock the wind to the right. The left payed off with a nice shift and Keith and Yvette Davids making good gains. The mostly starboard tack run didn’t provide too many passing lanes some local puffs allowed some to sail lower and faster causing for some tight leeward mark roundings. The challenging conditions continue up the final beat but some found some pressure and lifts on the right corner. The Davids took the final race and Adam/Nick finished 2nd and Doug Hart / Jerelyn Biel finish third.

Doug and Jerelyn never won a race but sailed an amazingly consistent regatta to become our new District Champions. They’ll be out sailing at the Nationals together and should prove to be worthy competition. Also, a special thanks to the Heimler family who brought down two boats from San Francisco to race!
