By carefully selecting the size and layout of the forward, side and aft decks, these pieces can be cut from two 4 ft. x 8 ft. plywood panels — one panel for each side of the deck. In the photo below, the forward deck piece is 82 in. x 30 in., the side deck is 91 in. x 16 in., and the aft deck is 19 in. x 25 in. The dimensions are measured along and across the plywood face grain, respectively; and the dimensions include extra space around the edges of the pieces for trimming to match the hull, deck and cockpit framing. For this Snipe, the forward edge of the cockpit is 81 in. aft of the stem head, but this dimension could be reduced to 72-1/2 in. minimum in accordance with Snipe rules, which would provide room for a slightly longer aft deck if desired. The aft deck is 18 in. long, which is the minimum permitted by the Snipe rules, and the side decks are approximately 12 – 13 in. wide, which results in a cockpit width of 36 in. Imported 6 mm [1/4 in.] Okoume exterior marine plywood will be used for the deck, but “ribbon-grain” mahogany exterior marine plywood also could be used to provide a beautiful appearance when finished naturally with tung oil or epoxy sealer and marine varnish.
